The 'Prudence' project NHS

A live Brief (logo for the director of nursing awards) NHS

Evaluation

I was asked to come up with a logo for the director of nursing awards at basingstoke hospital, For PPRD I will hand in a paper based file of all the emails that have been sent and received throughout the process of designing this logo. I was working with my mum and a team of staff from the management and events teams at Basingstoke hospital on this logo, so agreeing on the final designs was a long process. Firstly I sent them a few rough designs I came up with to get the process started, I have found from previous experience that when working with a team of people with no design background its easier to give them more options to start with as they tend to have no idea what they want to begin with, they then can sort of see which way they want to go with the design, Usually by knowing what they dont want.
We decided on these two designs, with variations on colours etc, also they asked me to but dots between the letters as the logo looks to much like a name>> the director of this events name is Donna. and on the other, shrink the o, which I did. They ended up deciding on this one, and realising after asking around that it didn't look like a name.

Now I just need to perfect the logo and send it to them at res 300 in jpg format. Overall they are pretty happy with this logo.

My first attempts at word as image (a wee bit of typography for screen prints)

For our fundraising as a year group we have arranged an event to raise money for our final year show, Coffee Republic have said they will exhibit a selection of prints through-out December to help promote our fundraising event which is being held at postcards. They have a PR company who are going to run a story on us and try and get the event promoted in as much local media as possible. Also Coffee republic mentioned that they have been chosen as the venue for Bournemouth's annual local business meeting (which is happening in December). This means massive exposure for those who have work up at this time. They seem really keen to help push our work, get it seen and get it sold.

The Brief:

"Design a unique illustration based around the theme "animals".

Illustrations can be submitted as either a one off hand rendered piece, a screen print or a letterpress.

All work must be A2 in size and finished to the highest possible standards as it will be going up for sale into the public domain.

All prints will be framed on submission at a cost covered by the course."

Finally conquered time management

So after handing in "Visual communication in context 2" today with no last minute rushing what so ever and with all projects to a decent standard Im preety happy how each of my final pieces turned out apart from "thank you" as me and the printer may of had a small disagreement on that one :( , Im thinking I may of just nailed the whole time management thing (at last). fingers crossed anyway. After this unit, Im feeling more and more inspired to crack on and do some more live and competition briefs...

Evaluation

Looking back on this project (New "from"Old), I have realised my attention to detail was lacking. I have since re taken the photographs and changed a few bits on the final designs, so they are ready for my portfolio for example the back of my labels are not alined with each, minor details like this are actually major details when it comes to going for an interview, and showing someone your portfolio. It is a matter of whether you will get the job or not.

Evaluation

Reflecting on my Business Identity project, I have found some of the typography needs work in order to be ready to print for my portfolio.
This was a hard project for me as I couldn't quite come to terms with the fact I was designing business stationary for a dead person and not myself. I can now understand the reasons behind this, as if it where for a client I would have been dealing with the same problems. I needed to make this bold and attention grabbing and I think I achieved this after many designs.

Evaluation

I really like the out come of this. This project was called "Thank you" we had to say thank you to someone of our choice, I chose Josephine Cochron the inventor of the dishwasher. I had many final designs for the outcome of this project but after speaking to sally she told me the others where un necessary. I think I really achieved the antique look for this photograph seen as it was taken in our sink, this photograph shows how much more work we would of had to do with all the washing up, if it wasn't for her wise invention.

Evaluation

I really had fun with "Communicating Ideas" this project enabled me to really push the boat out with my ideas, this project was more about the idea itself than the design. I planned to create a social experiment to test how the average person gets affected by sound. I was really happy with the outcome, and the process was fun aswell, I learnt alot from this project and in the future I would like to set myself a project which expands on this.

We now have until next thurs, which is when we get our new briefs to crack on with those. Also for our fundraising as a year group we have arranged an event to raise money for our final year show, Coffee Republic have said they will exhibit a selection of prints through-out December to help promote our fundraising event which is being held at postcards. They have a PR company who are going to run a story on us and try and get the event promoted in as much local media as possible. which also needs to be done by friday so... no rest for the wicked ha! I started looking into what illustrators have done on the subject matter before and i've found some real good stuff:

After Fireworks, Sparklers, Marshmallow's, Toffee Apples, Cider and Brainstorming...

So after a very much uninspired yesterday with a few forced ideas and some panicking, today has been good! I was just taking my morning stroll to Costa and that was where the magic happened, hello creative genius you rescued me :)

Basically I picked Julian Treasure and his talk on the 4 ways sound effects us...
My plan is to create a social experiment to test how the average person gets affected by sound. Basically Im going to have a set of four blank boards whether they are white boards, chalk boards, wooden boards, (are things I still have to consider) each will have a set of headphones and will be placed in a busy environment (Im thinking Southbank) The headphones will each be playing different sounds (music or noise) but each will have a specific "mood" 1, Happy (something along the lines on Stevie Wonder: Master Blaster/or Dont you worry bout a thing?) 2, Sad, (Ive looked into a few film soundtracks pearl harbor being one) 3, Calm (was thinking something along the lines of Amiina: Seoul) 4, Uneasy/Angry (M83 Car chase terror or even just an alarm of some kind) Attached to each board will be some kind of drawing equipment which will be determined by the style of board I decide to go with, the idea being that it will make people stop and interact. On the board somewhere there will be the words "express yourselves here" if my theory works, each individuals drawing should be effected by the sound they are hearing.

Even after this afternoons tutorials Im still feeling pretty inspired (even more so in-fact) the feedback from Justin and the guys was good, I was told to listen to John Barry, John Williams, and the soundtrack to the film "Apocalypse Now", also maybe look into doing a "Smart board" type thing/ I should look into something along the lines of the Etch a Sketch too. But other than that I was told to crack on and "just do it" in the words of Nike :)

Its now 07.25 pm and Im shattered........ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz

Ted.com

So We've been given the brief for our new project "Communicating ideas" we have been asked to watch 7 talks from desigers such as Stefan Sagmeister, Mena Trott and Julian Treasure. We are then asked to respond to the idea presented and then communicate it visually by an appropriate means to the British public. We need to consider how the information would be disseminated and how to present our concepts.

I have just finished watching the 7 videos the majority of them are very interesting indeed :) I think before I start my idea generation Im going to choose a video and watch it until I can pretty much recite it word for word, so I can start with my concepts with the best possible knowledge on my subject matter.

Just a few things to look at...

http://vimeo.com/4660085 - A talk by Michael Crowe & Lenka Clayton they speak about their personal work and then move onto their ‘Mysterious letters’ project in which they send a handwritten letter to everyone in a small village. It has an excellent concept and is  beautifully delivered.

also I just come across this site:

Dreamweaver...

So... Neil has been teaching us dreamweaver on tuesday evenings which I can honestly say is pretty damm awesome... considering we are only two sessions down, and I have dabbled with dreamweaver before, I am learning alot, and its not boring yey! I am also looking forward to my tuesday evenings in UNI which doesn't usually happen on these short courses. So thanks Neil! :)

CANNED! Not my finals, as im still on the hunt for some thin, shiney paper, but the design is there...

New from Old

The next project, which surprisingly I thoroughly enjoyed. We had to re-brand and design packaging from one of the following:
*Tapioca
*Lard
*Mushy Pea's
*Rice Pudding
*Fondou
*Tinned Pie's
*Spam
*Lunchen Meat
*Tinned/Canned Vegtables

After alot of Market research and idea processing I came up with a few design's this one is my final piece.

Once I've photographed these labels onto my tin's I shall upload them to show how they will look on the shelves.

Basically the idea behind this is to re-brand and re-market tinned vegetables to the wealthier demographic, to do this I decided on adding a slight sex appeal to what would usually be a pretty bland product which mainly only the older generation generally  buy, due to the fact "tinned vegtables" have a long shelf life.

I decided to position my product in high end supermarkets such as Waitrose and M&S as this is where my target consumer would be more likely to shop...

I've been slacking on the blog front!

Well it's been a long while since I have posted, In-fact it was two briefs ago.

Firstly, project two, Business identity: we picked names from a "hat" all the names in the hat had a connection (they where all dead) we where asked to design a set of stationary for our chosen person, I chose Emmeline Pankhurst: She was the main suffragette, the woman who got women the vote! A very important, well respected, determined lady, who the women of today should owe a lot of thanks too. I found this project hard as I wanted to show the passion and importance of Emmeline, without undermining her.

Its Saturday and its Mr Micklefield's Birthday

Morning well spent with a full english breakfast :)

So yesterday the crit went well, I was asked to maybe consider using "the arguments people have over the washing up" "piles and piles of dirty plates" "some marygold gloves" basically to show the alternatives that would of happened if Josephine hadn't invented the dish washer but my original idea may work better we shall soon see. I got on to attempting the marygold poster. ill upload it in a bit blogger is poorly!

Friday 9 October 2009

I messed up! (surprise surprise)

So previously I uploaded my posters, In poster 1 the idea was to use the steam from a clean load and write in it "thank you" but me being stupid and tired totally forgot, sooo I suppose we will see in the critique who is paying attention and I will have to make amends to this photograph tonight. wish me luck :)

Thursday 8 October 2009

Some progression.. not quite what I had in mind but hey hoe!

First poster of two so far, hoping to make a third.

Second poster of two so far ready to be critiqued tomorrow.

I'm quite happy with the progress on both these out comes so far, but I guarantee they with both get ripped to pieces in the critique eeeeek..

A lot of help gained "thanks" Sally!

One of my original idea's (the one I am going to proceed on with) thanks to talking things over with Sally I am now less confused and have realised that the message that this photograph portrays is not quite what I had in mind. I have now come up with a few ideas to attempt tonight, my favorite being to write "Thank You"on the steamed up glasses as soon as the dishwasher finishes its load ;P

I shall update you later on how this goes fingers crossed.

After a little Lateral thinking...

I have now got myself in a sticky situation, there are two people I would quite like to "Thank" one of which is Josephine Cochron (the inventor of the dishwasher) as this invention has been extremely useful to me and saved me alot of time and effort, but on the other hand The two co-founder's (Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger) of Wikipedia have also done me proud over the past few years helping me understand the meanings of words such as "antidisestablishmentarianism" which means what? you may ask well it is a political position that originated in nineteenth-century Britain, in opposition to proposals to remove the Church of England's status as the state church of Ireland and Wales.

Right Im off for my tutorial hopefully Sally can help me with which idea is the best until this evening goodbye x

first day being a 2nd year

So after a very much enjoyable summer, were all back to UNI and surprisingly it actually feels pretty good. We have been given our New brief which consists of four smallish projects: "Thank You" "Business Identity" "New from old" and "Communicating Ideas" we will be working on these up until November time. I have been researching and brainstorming some ideas for the first project "Thank You" and have finally came up with a simple yet effective solution I think and hope will answer the brief well. Considering how today our roof nearly caved in on us I thought I would leave it until tomorrow to get started on the practical side of things so until tomorrow Goodbye :)

Summer time and the weather is fine...

What a great summer I had.... Started it off by a trip to see the 2nd years New Blood show for young designers up in Earls Court, Kensington which was great and it really inspired me to work a lot harder this year. We also found a nice little Art shop which sells things as cheap as chips so that was a bonus.

I worked a little, managed to get a little more work experience which was good due to the fact I couldn't get any last term and ended up having to do a live brief instead (which I must say turned out pretty dam spiffing considering) most thanks goes to Master Benjamin Hutley himself on that one, I also managed to get some work from the NHS, mainly photography but also they asked me to design them a logo for "The Director Of Nursing Awards" in Basingstoke hospital which will be held in January of next year! Odds and sods such as posters for mates who work in bars, experience is experience at the end of the day and it kept me in focus as I didn't have a full time job, so yes money was an issue :(
but....
I did go on a lovely free trip to Malta with the family, lovely place no sand but the fat rocks i liked lots, and it was good to spend abit of time with them as I havn't been away with them in donkeys years. Bestival was also another cheeky highlight of my summer...  discovered The Correspondents who are a swing-hop duo who where made famous by remixing "The Jungle Book" was awesome!
